Bush\u2019s pets: Barney, Miss Beazley and India the cat pose for the cover of a cookbook presented to Mrs. Bush on her birthday by her staff.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>White House Sweet Dough Butter Cookies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>From the Obamas 2011 Halloween Treats<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last year at the White House each child that passed through the North Portico received a cookie made from this recipe plus some dried fruit and White House M &amp;Ms<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>*<\/em><\/strong><em>Dough must be chilled overnight.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>*<\/strong>Preheat the oven to 350F.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Ingredients<\/em><br \/>\n<\/strong>1 lb Sugar<br \/>\n2 lbs Butter<br \/>\n3 lbs All Purpose Flour<br \/>\n3 Eggs<br \/>\n1 tsp Vanilla<br \/>\n1 tsp Salt<br \/>\n<strong><em>Method<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>1.<\/strong> Mix the butter and sugar till soft and well beaten.<br \/>\n<strong>2.<\/strong> Then add eggs, vanilla, salt and half the flour. Beat on slow speed till mixed, then add the rest of the flour and mix until incorporated.<br \/>\n<strong>3.<\/strong> Push flat onto a cookie sheet and refrigerate overnight.<br \/>\n<strong>4.<\/strong> The next day, roll dough out to one quarter inch thick, and cut out cookie shapes with cookie cutter.<br \/>\n<strong>5.<\/strong> Bake at 350F for 14 minutes and then allow to cool.<em><br \/>\nDecorate as desired.<\/em><strong> <\/strong><em>Number of cookie servings varies depending on size of cookies cut.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>White House Grilled Garden Pizza<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just last week Mrs. Obama, and White House chefs joined children to harvest vegetables during the third annual White House Kitchen Garden Fall harvest.\u00a0 With some of those fabulous vegetables White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford made a wonderful and shared the recipe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 12 inch pizza dough,\u00a0 can use freezer dough<\/li>\n<li>2 tbsp olive oil<\/li>\n<li>1 eggplant, cut into coins, \u00bd inch thick<\/li>\n<li>1 sweet potato,\u00a0 peeled, sliced thinly<\/li>\n<li>1 red pepper,\u00a0 sliced, \u00bc inch thick<\/li>\n<li>salt and pepper to taste<\/li>\n<li>6 oz.\u00a0 tomato sauce, your favorite brand<\/li>\n<li>6 oz.\u00a0 shredded mozzarella, lowfat<\/li>\n<li>chopped fresh basil, for garnish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Toss the vegetables in olive oil and salt and pepper.\u00a0 Grill until softened but still a bit crunchy.\u00a0 Set aside.<\/p>\n<p>Flatten the pizza dough\u00a0 until about 1\/8 inch thick.\u00a0 Brush with olive oil.\u00a0\u00a0 Season with salt and pepper.\u00a0 Grill on both sides for about 2 minutes on each side.\u00a0 Top with the tomato sauce,\u00a0 mozzarella and grilled veggies.\u00a0 Garnish with basil.\u00a0 Serve immediately.\u00a0 Serves 4<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another one of Mrs. Bush\u2019s favorites was this fabulous meat marinade:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-472 aligncenter\" title=\"Screen Shot 2012-10-17 at 10.02.37 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jenniferpickens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-17-at-10.02.37-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"685\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferpickens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-17-at-10.02.37-PM.png 785w, https:\/\/www.jenniferpickens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-17-at-10.02.37-PM-300x196.png 300w, https:\/\/www.jenniferpickens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-17-at-10.02.37-PM-600x392.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Above &#8211; President George W.
