{"id":581,"date":"2012-12-26T23:24:09","date_gmt":"2012-12-27T04:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jenniferpickens.com\/blog\/?p=581"},"modified":"2012-12-27T12:42:14","modified_gmt":"2012-12-27T17:42:14","slug":"peace-on-earth-good-will-to-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jenniferpickens.com\/blog\/peace-on-earth-good-will-to-men\/","title":{"rendered":"Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my most favorite parts of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christmasatthewhitehouse.com\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Christmas at the White House<\/span><\/a> book is this article I discovered, written by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy shortly before the President\u2019s tragic death (seee below).\u00a0 In it she said \u201cthe world around us is a complicated and troubled place\u201d, and this of course was even more meaningful after the assassination of her husband. It also seems to be very appropriate this Christmas after the unthinkable event in Connecticut.\u00a0 May we all wish this Christmas season for her words to be true: \u201cPeace on earth, good will to men.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 An ancient tale tells us of the Christmas custom of burning a Yule log in every fireplace and of how, as the log was drawn from the forest, \u201ceach wayfarer raised his hat as it passed, for he well knew that it was full of good promises, and that its flame would burn out old wrongs. . . .\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The lights of our trees and homes in this season still signal this most ancient promise of Christmas\u2014the end of all wrongs, the fulfillment of old hopes\u2026. \u00a0But even though the White House is often a center of national attention\u2014a public building\u2014during the Christmas season it is the home of an American family sharing in the anticipation of the joy of this festival.
